American Identity: Vocabulary - Experience Summary

Students interact with vocabulary words that they will encounter throughout Unit 9: American Identity.

Objectives:

  • Learn vocabulary related to American identity.

Scene 1 — Engage

Student Activity

Students are introduced to the unit focus on American identity and review definitions for key vocabulary terms (ethos, landmark, national identity, nationalism, patriotism, responsibility, right, symbol). They then respond to a word cloud prompt by naming other types of identity they can have besides American identity.

Teacher Moves

Present the lesson overview and objective, highlight each vocabulary term and its definition, and clarify unfamiliar words. Use the teacher note to explain personal/individual and social/collective identity, prompting students to see identity as a combination of multiple factors.

Scene 2 — Explore

Student Activity

Students complete a drag-and-drop activity to label one image as a landmark and the other as a symbol. They then match vocabulary words (nationalism, ethos, patriotism) to their definitions in a drag-and-drop text exercise.

Teacher Moves

Ask students to identify Mount Rushmore and the American flag and discuss why Mount Rushmore is considered a landmark and the flag a symbol, including its features and meanings. Provide historical context about Mount Rushmore and its controversy for the Sioux, and guide students to connect the images and matching activity to the vocabulary definitions.

Scene 3 — Explain

Student Activity

Students read about rights and responsibilities, including examples of responsibilities at home. They then complete a two-column table by listing examples of their rights and responsibilities as students in school.

Teacher Moves

Clarify the distinction between rights and responsibilities using the provided explanation, and, as needed, share sample answers (e.g., right to a safe environment and education; responsibility to obey rules and respect others). Support students in generating their own school-based examples and connect them back to the vocabulary terms.

Scene 4 — Elaborate

Student Activity

Students revisit the full list of unit vocabulary words and write a short paragraph that correctly uses as many of the terms as possible, applying their understanding in context.

Teacher Moves

Display the vocabulary list for reference and encourage students to incorporate multiple terms accurately in their writing. Review student posts, identify and correct any misuses of vocabulary, and provide feedback that reinforces precise use of the terms.

Scene 5 — Evaluate

Student Activity

Students complete the exit quiz by answering all the questions.

Teacher Moves

Facilitate the assessment and use student data to evaluate understanding, address misconceptions, and identify areas for growth.
