Objectives:
- Identify state symbols such as the anthem, flower, and bird.
- Analyze the Pledge to the Texas Flag.
Scene 1 — Engage
Student Activity
Students read an introduction about common images associated with Texas and learn that they will focus on official state symbols. They then respond to a poll by selecting which items they think are official Texas state symbols, such as foods, animals, and other objects.
Teacher Moves
Present the lesson overview and objectives, clarifying the vocabulary word “recite.” After students complete the poll, reveal that all listed items are official symbols and prompt discussion about which choices students find surprising or disagree with, using this to build interest in the topic.
Scene 2 — Explore
Student Activity
Students read background information about the state anthem “Texas, Our Texas,” then read through the full lyrics of the three verses and chorus. Using a graphic organizer, they restate the main idea of each verse and the chorus in their own words.
Teacher Moves
Read the lyrics aloud with the class, explaining difficult vocabulary and contractions and inviting students to identify examples of literal and figurative language. If needed, teach or review the melody and lead students in singing the anthem. After students complete the organizer, review and discuss the main ideas for each verse and the chorus to ensure understanding.
Scene 3 — Explain
Student Activity
Students read a brief explanation that Texas students are required to recite the Pledge to the Texas Flag and then read the pledge itself. In two separate response activities, they first restate the pledge in their own words and then explain what they are promising to do when they recite it.
Teacher Moves
Display and read the pledge with the class, clarifying its meaning as needed. After students submit their paraphrases and explanations, share selected exemplary or interesting responses to prompt whole-class discussion about loyalty, respect for the flag, and the responsibilities implied by making a pledge.
Scene 4 — Elaborate
Student Activity
Students read that the mockingbird is the official Texas state bird and imagine serving on a committee to recommend a new state symbol. They post a proposal for a new or revised state symbol, explaining why it represents Texas, and then review classmates’ posts and respond to at least two with questions or positive comments.
Teacher Moves
Encourage students to justify their proposed symbols with clear reasons that connect to Texas history, culture, or geography. Optionally hold an informal class vote on the best new symbol and, if desired, guide students in developing a formal proposal that could be sent to their Texas state representative as a civic engagement extension.
Scene 5 — Evaluate
Student Activity
Students complete the exit quiz by answering all the questions.
Teacher Moves
Facilitate the assessment and use student data to evaluate understanding, address misconceptions, and identify areas for growth.
