Southern Europe: Society and Culture - Experience Summary

Students are introduced to the connection between culture, history, and physical elements of life such as food. Then they explore the distinctions of Mediterranean cuisine. Next, students research and report on a food tradition or celebration of Greece, Italy, or Spain. Finally, they research a Southern European restaurant in their own community and evaluate it based on what they have learned.

Objectives:

  • Describe the history and features of Mediterranean food in Southern Europe.
  • Explain the cultural influence of Mediterranean food in Southern Europe.
  • Compare and contrast elements of Mediterranean food throughout Southern Europe and other places.

Scene 1 — Engage

Student Activity

Students read an introduction connecting family food traditions to culture and history, then examine a quote by Claudio Magris about culture and history “plunging into things.” They respond on a discussion wall explaining what they think the author means and participate in a class discussion about how culture and history are reflected in physical objects, habits, and foods in their own lives.

Teacher Moves

Present the lesson overview and objectives, then guide students in interpreting the quote and sharing examples from their own cultures. Facilitate whole-class discussion to highlight how culture and history connect people to their past and present through everyday objects and practices.

Scene 2 — Explore

Student Activity

Students are introduced to the idea of the Mediterranean diet and respond to a word cloud prompt by listing words they associate with it. They then read An Introduction to Mediterranean Cuisine to learn about the geographic region, climate, shared history, common elements, and distinctions of Mediterranean food, using a graphic organizer to take structured notes. Finally, they post to a discussion wall comparing what Mediterranean countries share in common in their food and what makes Southern European Mediterranean food unique.

Teacher Moves

Review and discuss student word cloud responses to surface prior knowledge about Mediterranean cuisine. Encourage careful note-taking in the graphic organizer and clarify key ideas from the reading as needed. Highlight and share exemplary wall responses with the class to deepen understanding of both commonalities and distinctions within Mediterranean food traditions.

Scene 3 — Explain

Student Activity

Students conduct individual research on an important food tradition or celebration from Greece, Italy, or Spain, beginning with Kids' World Travel Guide and then using additional online sources. They select a specific topic and create a report that describes the tradition or celebration, includes three to five factual details about how it is created or carried out, incorporates images, and explains how it connects culture and history with the material world today. Students post their reports or links to digital presentations on a discussion wall and then review classmates’ work, responding to at least two peers with questions or positive comments.

Teacher Moves

Explain the research task and clarify expectations for the report, including content, visuals, and explanation of cultural connections. Support students in locating and evaluating online sources and in using digital tools to create their reports. Monitor and review wall posts, prompting students to give substantive, respectful feedback and, if desired, organize the activity in small groups while ensuring each student submits individual work.

Scene 4 — Elaborate

Student Activity

Students research a local Southern European or Mediterranean-style restaurant (Italian, Spanish, Greek, or similar) using online menus, reviews, and images. They then post to a discussion wall comparing what they have learned about Southern European cuisine with what they see in the restaurant, explaining how the restaurant’s offerings reflect the culture and cuisine of Southern Europe.

Teacher Moves

Introduce the task of investigating a local restaurant and, if local options are limited, adapt the activity by having students design an “ideal” Mediterranean restaurant menu based on their learning and additional research. Guide students in analyzing menus and other information for cultural connections, and facilitate a class discussion where students share and compare their findings.

Scene 5 — Evaluate

Student Activity

Students complete the exit quiz by answering all the questions.

Teacher Moves

Facilitate the assessment and use student data to evaluate understanding, address misconceptions, and identify areas for growth.
