Anime

Modern anime started in the 1950s and grew with Osamu Tezuka’s Astro Boy, a show about a robot boy. In the 1980s and 1990s, anime became popular worldwide with series like Dragon Ball and Pokémon, as well as films by Hayao Miyazaki, like Spirited Away. Anime can be for kids or adults, with genres like adventure, science fiction, romance, and fantasy.

Pokemon

Pokémon are fantasy creatures from Japan, created in the 1990s for a video game by Satoshi Tajiri. The name Pokémon combines “pocket” and “monster.” In the games, players, called Pokémon trainers, capture and train Pokémon to battle. Popular Pokémon like Pikachu helped the games become a worldwide hit, and Pokémon inspired trading cards, toys, a TV series, movies, and even clothing. Pokémon GO, a 2016 mobile game, lets players capture Pokémon in real-life locations. Some adults worry about the game’s message, but Pokémon remains popular around the world.
