Five Civilized Tribes of the Southeast Native Americans

Prior to 1830, many Native American tribes lived in the Southeastern United States. These tribes of indigenous people were expert farmers that grew maize, beans, squash, and tobacco in the rich, fertile soil of this area. The most familiar of these tribes were the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, and Seminole. Together these tribes were referred to as the Five Civilized Tribes by American settlers.
