Civics State and Local Governments Local Government
Students learn how local government is set up and what its roles and responsibilities are. Next, students get an overview of how local government works. Then they do a scavenger hunt to find information about their specific local government. Finally, students consider how federal, state, and local governments have to work together in the situations such as natural disasters.

This learning experience is designed for device-enabled classrooms. You may find it challenging to understand what federal, state, and local governments do. Don’t they overlap in a lot of their work? In this experience, you will get a deeper understanding of what local government does and how it affects your life!

Imagine that you are home one evening after dark and the lights suddenly go out in your house. You jump up and look out the window. You notice that the lights are off in all the other houses around you.






Discuss student responses. Point out that many people would probably make a phone call to report the problem to the electric company or another city service. Explain that electricity is one type of service often provided by or through local governments.


Name another service provided by your local government.

Post your answer

Examples are garbage collection, libraries, parks and recreation, day care services, infrastructure development and maintenance. Ask students to explain why local governments are important. Then tell them that by the end of this experience, they will have a better understanding of just how important local governments are.
