Overview In this experience, students build a classwide timeline of the history of the Berlin Wall. Then they learn about the revolutions that ended Communist rule across Eastern Europe. Next they examine the factors that contributed to the collapse of these Communist regimes. Finally they research what happened in the various countries in the decade following the overthrow of the Communist governments. Students will collaborate in small groups for scene 3 to scene 4. This experience focuses on the countries of Eastern Europe. The breakup of the Soviet Union itself is covered in the next experience. Objectives
As Eastern Europeans wearied of their lives under Communist regimes, they lost any faith they might have had in the communist system and ideology. Their economies were in shambles, they lived with chronic shortages of basic necessities, severe pollution threatened their health, and they had none of the personal freedoms treasured in Western liberal democracies. In this experience, you will learn about the events that finally caused the Communist governments of Eastern Europe to collapse.
