Overview

In this experience, students predict on a map which nations remained neutral during World War II. Next they focus on the European front, followed by the Pacific front. Then they discuss a major event as a turning point in World War II. Finally they prepare an explanation for a fifth-grader about how World War II was fought.

This experience has many videos with historic footage, and it covers a lot of material. You may choose to teach it over two or three class periods.

Out of 99 recognized sovereign nations at the start of World War I, only 14 declared themselves neutral throughout the war.

Name one or more of the nations that remained neutral. If you cannot name any, write “unknown.”

Post your answer

The fourteen neutral nations were Sweden, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Ireland, Turkey, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, and the microstates of Andorra, Monaco, Liechtenstein, San Marino, and Vatican City.

Mark the map below according to the given key. At the end of the lesson you can return to this map to see how close your predictions were to the historical facts.

An answer key map is available in the Student Pack.

Use the map as an opportunity to emphasize how many nations were involved in World War II.

If necessary, review the following vocabulary with your students before continuing:

  • front: the area of fighting where two armies face each other
  • theater: the general area where there is fighting during a war

Ask students if they have seen movies or read books set in World War II. Have them relate what they learned about life during the war from these sources.

When everyone is ready to continue, unlock the next scene.
