On January 10, 1901, Anthony Lucas was drilling when he hit oil. It blew out of the ground and flew 150 feet into the air. This moment changed the Texas economy, which would gradually shift from cotton and cattle to oil. In this experience, you will learn about Spindletop and the beginning of the oil industry.

  • Describe some of the earliest uses for oil.
  • Explain how the oil industry contributed to the industrialization of Texas.
