Students learn about the discovery of oil at Spindletop near Beaumont. The students examine how the gusher changed the oil industry and made Texas a powerful part of the oil business.
The Progressive Movement in Texas
Students learn about the impact of the Progressive Movement on Texas. They focus on notable reforms in Texas: the commission form of municipal government, electoral reform, women's suffrage, and prohibition.
The Mexican Revolution and Hispanic Americans in Texas
Students learn about the Mexican Revolution and its impact on Texas. They examine the involvement of the United States and some of its citizens in the Mexican civil war. Then they learn about refugees from the war and listen to an account of the Texas Ranger massacre of innocent Hispanics. Next they explain how the Mexican Revolution affected treatment of Hispanics in Texas. Finally, they analyze the role of the League of United Latin American Citizens in Hispanic civil rights.
Texas During World War I
Students describe the Zimmerman Telegram and its connection to Texas. Then they locate the military bases in Texas. Next they learn about the role of Texan African Americans and women in the war. They visit a virtual exhibit about Texas and the Great War, and they examine an artifact from the exhibit. Finally, they elaborate on how World War I impacted Mexican American veterans living in Texas.
