Texas History Conservatism and Contemporary Texas Texans in the Arts
Students are introduced to Texas folklorist J. Frank Dobie. Then they conduct research on famous Texas artists. Finally, they elaborate on the question, What make someone a Texas artist?

Overview

In this experience, students are introduced to Texas folklorist J. Frank Dobie. Then they conduct research on famous Texas artists. Finally, they elaborate on the question, What makes someone a Texas artist?

Students will collaborate in small groups for scenes 3 and 4. In scene 3, each group will research one of the following Texas artists: Roy Bedichek, Diane Gonzales Bertrand, Scott Joplin, Elisabet Ney, Amado Peña Jr., Walter Prescott Webb, and Horton Foote. Ensure that there are at least seven small groups.

Note that there is no quiz at the end of this experience.

Objective

  • Identify contributions to the arts by Texans of a variety of different cultures.

The cultural diversity of Texas has created a rich literary and artistic history. In this experience, you will learn about various Texans active in the arts.


Name an artist—for example, an actor, musician, novelist, painter or sculptor, dancer—who was born or raised in Texas. To list more than one, separate them with a comma, like this: Sam Houston, Stephen Austin.

The list of possibilities is long. Contemporary artists whom the students may recognize include: Eva Longoria, Hilary Duff, Matthew McConaughey, Beyoncé, Willie Nelson, and Rick Riordan.
