Continents, Oceans, and Climates

Students review what they know about the continents and oceans. Then they learn additional information about both. Next, they explore the differences between weather and climate and look at the climate zones throughout the world. Finally, students work in groups to learn about climate-related topics and report back to the rest of the class.

Overview

In this experience, students review what they know about the continents and oceans. Then they learn additional information about both. Next, they explore the differences between weather and climate and look at the climate zones throughout the world. Finally, students work in groups to learn about climate-related topics and report back to the rest of the class.

Vocabulary Words:

continent: one of Earth's largest land areas, such as Africa, Asia, or North America.
ocean: a very large body of salt water that covers much of Earth.
world ocean: the connected body of salt water that includes all of Earth's oceans.
climate: the usual weather patterns of a place over a long period of time.
weather: the condition of the atmosphere at a certain time and place.
climate zone: a region of Earth with similar long-term weather patterns, such as tropical, dry, or polar.
precipitation: water that falls from clouds, such as rain, snow, sleet, or hail.
ocean current: a large stream of moving ocean water that can carry heat, nutrients, and animals.
