A personal narrative is a story written about a specific moment in your life. Throughout your life you will face moments that change you. Whether it is learning a new skill, meeting a new person, or overcoming an obstacle, these turning points impact who you are. They are often the most powerful stories you have to tell. In this experience, you will develop a topic that is meaningful to you into a coherent personal narrative. You will find your personal voice as you write about this topic for your reader. A successful personal narrative focuses on idea development, organization, and the author’s voice.

Objectives:

  • Choose a topic for writing a personal narrative.
  • Develop a meaningful topic for a personal narrative in a logical and coherent manner while incorporating a personal voice.
  • Compose a personal narrative, incorporating the essential features of the genre.
  • Revise and edit the personal narrative.

Read the following quote:

“Every memory makes me who I am right now, in this moment. Good or bad, all experiences shape you.” –L.H. Cosway

What does the quote mean to you? Can you think of memories that have shaped you?

Post your answer

Use student responses to spark a discussion regarding memories that shape lives and how they might make a powerful story for a personal narrative. This should lead into the purpose of the experience—writing their own personal narratives.

Students learned the elements of a personal narrative in the experience “Reading Personal Narratives.” If necessary, review the elements now:

  • written in first person
  • about a specific moment
  • uses dialogue or interesting details
  • follows a logical order
  • tells the reader why the event or experience was important
