Book Review (Fiction)

Students learn the elements of writing a book review. Then, they choose a book to read and explain why they chose it. Next, they read the book and write their book review. Finally, they rate the book and create a new cover for it.

This learning experience is designed for device-enabled classrooms. Note that there is a complementary experience in the Non-Fiction Texts unit. Either experience can be used multiple times throughout the school year for students to submit a book review via Exploros.

Suppose you have just finished reading a fiction book, a novel. You loved the story that the author invented. You fell in love with the characters and the setting, the time and place where it happened.

What would you tell your friends about the book to make them want to read it?

Briefly discuss a few interesting student responses. They are likely to offer some valid ideas, such as, “I’d say what the book is about,” and “I’d say why I liked the book.” Tell students that in this experience, they will take those ideas and express them fully in a detailed report on a book.
