Brazil: Society and Culture
Students learn about the culture of the river dwellers along the Amazon River. Then they explore the Afro-Brazilian influence in Salvador. They research cultural features and challenges in Salvador and present their findings. Finally, they are introduced to some of the etiquette and customs of Brazil and describe them in a letter.

Brazil is the fifth largest country in the world in both area and population. With a country that large, there is sure to be a range of cultural traditions. You will learn about some of them in this experience.

The river dwellers along the Amazon have their own cultural norms and social patterns, which sometimes come into conflict with the typical idea of progress. Learn about one major conflict by watching Clash of Cultures over Amazon Dams.


How do you think the culture of the river dwellers might be different from the culture of other Brazilians? Make a prediction about life in the other regions of Brazil, particularly the regions that are densely urban with a variety of ethnicities.
