Overview In this experience, students are introduced to the storytelling tradition of Latin America, particularly Colombia. They listen to a Colombian children’s folktale and compare it to one they know. Then they learn about Gabriel García Márquez and magical realism and read the first paragraph of one of Márquez’s stories. Finally, they do their own research to identify other elements of Colombian culture. Objectives:
Sometimes it is easy to lump countries together when you don’t know much about them. In this experience, you’ll focus on just one country in Northern South America to see what makes it unique.

The great Colombian author and Nobel Prize in Literature winner Gabriel García Márquez once wrote in a story:
“It is not true that people stop pursuing dreams because they grow old, they grow old because they stop pursuing dreams.”
