The twentieth century brought both continuity and change to the United States. Throughout this unit, you will learn about some trends that started in the previous century—such as industrialization and urbanization—as well as changes within American society.

This lesson builds your vocabulary of words you will use in this unit. The words are:


  • alliance: a formal agreement between nations or other groups to work together toward a particular goal
  • arms race: an effort to collect more weapons as a warning to the enemy not to attack
  • civil rights: the basic rights given to all citizens of a country
  • communism: a government system with a strong central government that holds total power over the political, economic, and social decision-making systems
  • consumerism: the activity of buying consumer goods
  • depression: a period of time with high unemployment, lower economic activity, many business failures, and poverty
  • dictator: a leader who uses force to keep power
  • drought: a long period of time with little rain
  • integration: the process of allowing people of all races to use a place
  • nationalism: the belief that one nation is better than all others
  • neutrality: the state of not taking sides in a war or disagreement
  • prosperity: a condition of being successful and having a lot of money
  • satellite: a large electronic object that orbits the Earth and is used for communications and spying
  • segregation: the process of keeping people of different races separate by refusing people of a given race the right to use a place
  • unemployment: the state of being without a job or paying work
  • veteran: someone who served in the military, especially during a war


A long period with very little rain is called a drought. Illustrate the word drought by drawing or uploading a picture that shows the outcome of a drought.
