The Civil War ended. The Union had won the war, slavery was abolished, and the United States was faced with hard work putting the country back together. The South was left to rebuild its political, economic, and social structure. The Reconstruction period lasted from 1865 to 1877, when the United States withdrew the last of the federal troops from the South. In this lesson, you will get an overview of some of the issues facing Texas during Reconstruction. In the following lesson, you will look at some of these issues more closely.
