Overview In this experience, students examine the lives and contributions of four notable Texans from the Republic period: José Antonio Navarro, a Tejano political leader; William Goyens, a free Black businessman and community leader; John Coffee Hays, a Texas Ranger officer; and Mary Maverick, a writer who recorded life in San Antonio. Students examine the roles these individuals played in the Republic and some of the challenges they faced. They also analyze historical evidence to better understand life in Texas during the Republic period. Note that there is no quiz at the end of this experience. Instead students are given meaningful opportunities to write throughout the experience. Objectives:
The Republic of Texas existed for just under ten years, from the Declaration of Independence on March 2, 1836, to the transfer of government to the new state government in February 1846. During that time, many people influenced the political, economic, and social development of the Republic.
In this lesson, you will learn about several notable Texans and examine the roles they played in shaping the Republic of Texas.
Objectives:
