Mission Concepción, San Antonio

So far in this unit, you have learned about European explorers who came to the Americas hoping to find wealth. These expeditions were expensive.

Why would a king or queen need a lot of money to send an expedition to the Americas?

Post your answer

Students may explain that expeditions cost a great deal of money because rulers had to pay for ships, crews, food, water, weapons, and other supplies for a long journey.

Possible student answers:

  • to buy or build ships
  • to pay the crew
  • to buy food and water
  • to buy weapons and supplies

Guide students back to the main idea that exploration was expensive, so rulers had to decide whether the possible rewards were worth the cost and risk.
