The Pack contains associated resources for the learning experience, typically in the form of articles and videos. There is a teacher Pack (with only teacher information) and a student Pack (which contains only student information). As a teacher, you can toggle between both to see everything.
Here are the teacher pack items for Colonizing Texas, 1821–1830:
Overview In this experience, students brainstorm the activities of an entrepreneur. Then they examine the Mexican land grant program in Texas. Next they learn about empresarios, including Martín de León, and explain why settlers immigrated for the land. Finally they analyze how an empresario was a type of entrepreneur. Note that there are three interrelated experiences that deal with settlement of Texas in the period of 1821–1830: There are two general resources provided in the Student Pack in all three experiences: a timeline of events in Texas history from 1826–1842 and a video (30 minutes). You can refer students to these resources at any point during these experiences. If you have access to leveled readers about Martín de León or empresarios in general, assign them to the students in parallel to this experience. Estimated duration: 30-40 minutes Vocabulary words: Objectives
After Mexico won independence from Spain, its leaders faced a challenge in Texas. The population was small, and the government worried about how to govern and protect the region. Many Indigenous nations already lived in Texas, and there were conflicts among different groups in the area. Mexico also worried that the United States might try to gain control of Texas. Even though Mexico offered land to encourage settlement, few Mexican families moved to this far northern region. In this lesson, you will learn about the empresario system Mexico used to bring more settlers to Texas.
