Overview In this experience, students begin by thinking about the ways that technology affects their own lives. Then they learn about how technology has improved communication around the world—between individuals, businesses, nations, and cultures. Next, students examine ways that technology has improved the environment. Then they learn about ways that technology has also harmed the environment and they consider ways to decrease the negative impact. Finally, students consider what life will be like in the future based on the advance of technology. Note that there is no quiz at the end of this experience. Instead students are asked to practice a short constructed response. Objectives:
A hundred years ago, how might you have communicated with a family member or friend who lived in another state? You might have written a letter, made a telephone call if you had access to a phone, sent a telegram, or traveled to visit in person. Communication was often slower and less immediate than it is today.
Technology has changed greatly over the last 100 years. In this experience, you will explore some of those changes and examine both their positive and negative effects.
Objectives:
How does (has) technology affect (affected) your life?
Discuss student responses. Are there effects that appear in most of the lists? After discussion, do students want to add to their lists? Ask students to consider ways that people in other cultures might use technology in similar ways. (Students will probably know, for example, that young people all over the world use social media and smart phones. They may assume that people use the Internet to find information, watch music videos, and shop.) The discussion should help students determine which aspects of technology are most global.
