In this experience, students learn the history of the Chinese market in order to see how its current state has evolved. They investigate facts about certain elements of the Chinese market today. Then they research and report on a specific element of that market. Finally, they consider how “shopping is always more than just shopping” in a written reflection. Objectives:
If you listen to the daily news, it would not be unusual to hear a story about the Chinese economy and its relationship to other economies in the world, particularly the United States. What’s the big deal about the Chinese economy? Why does it get so much attention? In this experience, you will learn more about why China is often in the news.

Discuss students’ varied responses. Some will associate it with a fruit and vegetable market, others might associate it with general shopping, and others may connect it to economic terms such as stocks and business. After you have discussed it briefly, introduce the term as it applies to economics. Explain that in the area of economics, market is the activity of buying and selling. Tell them that they may have heard an adult talk about the economic market in one of these ways: Tell them that an economic market is really just a more advanced version of a vegetable market. Some people have items to sell and others have items they want to buy. But in today’s world, that involves a lot more than fruits and vegetables!
