Russia and the Republics: Government and Economy
Students are introduced to the fall of the Soviet Union through a song. Then they explore more about the events of 1991. Next, they learn about the presidency of Vladimir Putin. Finally, in small groups, students research the current government and economy of one of the former Russian states and compare and contrast that state with others in the Russian Federation.

Overview

In this experience, students are introduced to the fall of the Soviet Union through a song. Then they explore more about the events of 1991. Next, they learn about the presidency of Vladimir Putin. Finally, in small groups, students research the current government and economy of one of the former Russian states and compare and contrast that state with others in the Russian Federation.

Students will collaborate in small groups for scene 4. You will assign each small group one of the 15 countries that make up the Russian Federation: Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Moldova, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Armenia, or Tajikistan for further research.

Objectives:

  • Describe the fall of the Soviet Union and its form of government.
  • Describe the presidency of Vladimir Putin.
  • Analyze and compare and contrast the government and political situations in former Soviet states.


From 1922–1991, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) consisted of 15 states all under the central communist government in Moscow. But in 1991, everything changed. In this experience, you will trace the history of the fall of the Soviet Union and the governmental and economic consequences.

Objectives:

  • Describe the fall of the Soviet Union and its form of government.
  • Describe the presidency of Vladimir Putin.
  • Analyze and compare and contrast the government and political situations in former Soviet states.
