Civics The American Economy Consumers
Students analyze their own spending habits. Then they analyze the Consumer Bill of Rights and apply the rights to food labeling. Next they learn about some of the government agencies that provide consumer protection and they examine an example of an actual product recall. Finally, they write a short case study of practicing their consumer rights.

This learning experience is designed for device-enabled classrooms. According to the Gallup poll, each day in the United States the average consumer—a person who purchases goods and services for personal use—spends about $100 on goods and services. That sounds like a lot of money! What are U.S. consumers spending so much money on every day?

  • Describe how the government protects consumers.
