Overview

In this experience, students learn about the Republic of Texas’s ad interim government and how it was formed. First, they identify President David Burnet and Vice President Lorenzo de Zavala. Then they analyze the impact of the Runaway Scrape. Finally, they write a letter to their families describing the situation in the area around Washington-on-the-Brazos.

The Constitutional Convention of 1836 met in early March 1836 to write the Texas Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the Republic. They also organized an ad interim government and elected officers. An ad interim government is a temporary government put into place until a nation can organize a permanent government. The convention quickly adjourned because the Mexican army was approaching. In this experience, you will learn about the ad interim government as the new officers began their role as leaders.

Consider what was going on during this time in Texas and name one or more important tasks that faced the new government of the Republic of Texas. What tasks do you think the ad interim government chose to do first?

Post your answer

Discuss with students the answers. Remind them that the Mexican army was fighting the Texan army. The ad interim government needed to unite the Texas people and encourage them to join the military forces to defend the new Republic. They also needed to obtain financial and military assistance from other countries.
