Overview In this experience, students learn about the Republic of Texas’s ad interim government and how it was formed. First, they identify President David Burnet and Vice President Lorenzo de Zavala. Then they analyze the impact of the Runaway Scrape. Finally, they write a letter to their families describing the situation in the area around Washington-on-the-Brazos. Objectives:
In March 1836, delegates at the Convention of 1836 adopted the Texas Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the Republic of Texas. They also created an ad interim government and selected officers to lead it. An ad interim government is a temporary government put in place until a more permanent government can be established.
The convention adjourned on March 17 as the military situation in Texas became increasingly urgent. Mexican forces were advancing, and the new government had to begin operating during an active war.
In this lesson, you will learn how the ad interim government worked and how its leaders responded to the challenges facing the new Republic of Texas.

Consider what was going on during this time in Texas and name one or more important tasks that faced the new government of the Republic of Texas. What tasks do you think the ad interim government chose to do first?
Discuss with students the answers. Remind them that the Mexican army was fighting the Texan army. The ad interim government needed to unite the Texas people and encourage them to join the military forces to defend the new Republic. They also needed to obtain financial and military assistance from other countries.
