The First Texas Government

Students learn about the opposing groups at the Consultation and the compromise resolution, the Declaration of November 7, 1835. Then, the students explain the collapse of the provisional government. Finally, they write a speech from the point of view of one of the delegates to the Consultation.

Overview

In this experience, students learn about the opposing groups at the Consultation and the compromise resolution, the Declaration of November 7, 1835. Then, the students explain the collapse of the provisional government. Finally, they write a speech from the point of view of one of the delegates to the Consultation.

Objectives:

  • Identify the structure of the first independent government in Texas
  • Describe the causes of the collapse of the provisional government


On November 4, 1835, delegates from several Texas communities met at San Felipe de Austin for a meeting called the Consultation. The fighting with Mexican forces had already begun, and the delegates needed to decide how Texas should respond.

One of their biggest questions was whether they were fighting to defend the federal system established by Mexico’s Constitution of 1824 or whether Texas should move toward independence. They also needed to create a temporary government that could organize the war effort and govern Texas during the conflict.

Objectives:

  • Identify the structure of the first independent government in Texas.
  • Describe the causes of the collapse of the provisional government.

The delegates elected Branch T. Archer to serve as president of the Consultation. They were divided over what Texas should do next.

  • One group wanted Texas to declare independence from Mexico immediately.
  • Another group wanted to continue resisting the Mexican government while fighting for the restoration of the federal system established by the Constitution of 1824.
  • Some delegates looked for a compromise between these two positions.
