What do you think of when you hear the word market?

Post your answer

Discuss students’ varied responses. Some will associate it with a fruit and vegetable market, others might associate it with general shopping, and others may connect it to economic terms such as stocks and business.

After you have discussed it briefly, introduce the term as it applies to economics. Explain that in the area of economics, market is the activity of buying and selling. Tell them that they may have heard an adult talk about the economic market in one of these ways:

  • “The stock market did really well today.”
  • “The market for smart phones is still growing.”
  • “I’m not sure there’s a market for DVD players anymore because so many people stream their movies.”

Tell them that an economic market is really just a more advanced version of a vegetable market. Some people have items to sell and others have items they want to buy. But in today’s world, that involves a lot more than fruits and vegetables!
