Southeast Asia: History and Its Influence
Students are introduced to the complex history of Southeast Asia. They explore the history from the ancient past to today, paying special attention to the period of Europe colonization and independence. Then students work in groups to investigate conflicts in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Indonesia in the 20th century. Finally, students develop questions they might ask in an interview with someone who survived one of these conflicts.

This learning experience is designed for device-enabled classrooms. Overview:

In this experience, students are introduced to the complex history of Southeast Asia. They explore the history from the ancient past to today, paying special attention to the period of European colonization and independence. Then students work in small groups to investigate conflicts in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Indonesia in the twentieth century. Finally, students develop questions they might ask in an interview with someone who survived one of these conflicts.

In scene 4, students will work in small groups to create presentations.

Objectives:

  • Describe the history of Southeast Asia, from its earliest civilizations to the present.
  • Explain the impact of trade, European colonialism, and conflict on Southeast Asia from the 1400s through the 1900s.


Like many parts of the world, Southeast Asia has a rich, ancient history that was interrupted by European colonizers who imposed their rule for several centuries. In this experience, you will learn more about the history of this region.

You may catch a travel show on TV that features visits to Vietnam, Cambodia, or Laos. In the mid-twentieth century, these countries were often mentioned on television for a different reason.


List something that you know about one of these countries.



Students might have heard of the Vietnam War, even if they don’t know many details. If they don’t know much or post some misinformation, point out that they will learn more details in this experience.
