Overview In this experience, students explore the influence of geography on cultural and social elements of Northern Europe. They do a scavenger hunt to find the languages, religions, cultural activities, and cuisine of the region and connect those to the geographic location of the region. Then, they learn about the history of Scandinavian design and its relationship to geography, manufacturing, and urbanization. Finally, students consider their own geographic location and design a piece of furniture based on it. The countries of Northern Europe for this experience include Iceland, Finland, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. Objectives:
What countries do you think of when you hear “Northern Europe”? If you were to travel there, what would you pack? What would you eat on your trip? Maybe you don’t know! In this experience, you’ll get the chance to explore the culture and society of Northern Europe and consider its connection to the geographical location.

Based on the geographic location of Northern Europe, what can you conclude about some of the features of daily life there?
Discuss student responses as a group. Be sure that students recognize that the region is cold, with short darker days in the winter, and that there is also a lot of water surrounding it. This influences how people spend time indoors and out, what they do for fun, and what they eat.
