World Cultures North America Mexico: Government and Economy
Students explore a timeline of significant political events in the development of the Mexican government. They learn about the constitution of 1917 and the form of government created as a result. Then they compare Mexico's government to the U.S. government. Students are introduced to the economy of Mexico and focus on the history of chocolate as part of the economy, past and present. Finally, students consider what it would be like to use an agricultural product as a form of money.

In this experience, students explore a timeline of significant political events in the development of the Mexican government. Students are introduced to the economy of Mexico, and focus on the history of chocolate as part of the economy past and present. Finally, students consider what it would be like to use an agricultural product as a form of money.
 
Objectives:

  • Describe the Constitution of 1917 and compare it to the U.S. system of government.
  • Describe Mexico’s contemporary economy.


When Mexico gained its independence from Spain in the 1800s, the country faced many years of challenge as it developed its own government.
 
In this experience, you will learn more about the history of the government in Mexico, as well as the current government and economy.

  • Describe the Constitution of 1917 and compare it to the U.S. system of government.
  • Describe Mexico’s contemporary economy.

These men are fighters in the Mexican revolution in 1911. They are carrying a variety of guns and ammunition and are standing with a homemade cannon. Ask students what they know about the word revolution and invite them to share what they know about other revolutions in history.
