The twentieth century ended only a few decades ago, and many people alive today experienced events from that period. During those years, the United States went through major changes in government, society, the economy, technology, culture, and its role in the world.
Many of those events and changes continue to influence life in the United States today. In this experience, you will explore several major events and eras of the twentieth century and examine how they helped shape the country we know today.

Discuss student responses. Then discuss what students know about Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. Say: The Civil Rights Movement was one of the most important eras in American history of the twentieth century. You will learn about it and other important events in this experience.
