Students learn about two Mexican cultural expressions: the celebration of the Day of the Dead and the artist Frida Kahlo. They explore the cultural aspects of both. Then they research and share other forms of Mexican cultural expression with the group.

Culture can be expressed through language, food, music, dance, art, clothing, literature, religion, celebrations, and other traditions. These cultural practices develop over time and can vary from one region or community to another.

Mexico has many cultural traditions shaped by Indigenous peoples, Spanish influence, regional customs, religion, migration, and changes over time. In this experience, you will explore several expressions of Mexican culture and examine how they reflect the country’s history and people.

The photo shows a Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, celebration in Mexico. This tradition is observed in many communities and is one example of how culture can be expressed through celebrations and customs.

Discuss what students already know about Día de los Muertos. Guide them to frame some questions they have about it moving forward. Remind them that celebrations are one form of cultural expression. One of the best ways to learn about a person or people group is to explore the cultural traditions they value.
