Europe: Natural Resources and the Environment

Europe: Natural Resources and the Environment
Students review the countries of Europe and then explore the climate and some of the important natural resources of the continent. Next, students get an overview on environmental threats in Europe and work in small groups to research and report on a specific problem. Finally, they take a look at the role that young people can play in preserving natural resources and the environment.

This learning experience is designed for device-enabled classrooms. The teacher guides the lesson, and students use embedded resources, social media skills, and critical thinking skills to actively participate. Overview

In this experience, students review the countries of Europe and then explore the climate and some of the important natural resources of the continent. Next, students get an overview on environmental threats in Europe and work in small groups to research and report on a specific problem. Finally, students take a look at the role that young people can play in preserving natural resources and the environment.

In scene 3, students will work together in small groups.

Although this experience can stand alone, it works best with the Europe: Geographic Passport experience, which introduces students to the geography of Europe.

Objectives:

  • Identify Europe’s climate and natural resources, including renewable and nonrenewable natural resources.
  • Describe and analyze environmental problems in Europe.

With about fifty countries in Europe, you can assume that there are also many climates and natural resources. In this experience, you will learn about these climates and natural resources, as well as threats to these resources.

Objectives:

  • Identify Europe’s climate and natural resources, including renewable and nonrenewable natural resources.
  • Describe and analyze environmental problems in Europe.

political map of Europe

Examine the political map of Europe.

Write three questions about the geography of the European nations. The questions should be ones that can be answered by examining the map. For example: “Q. Which country looks like a boot? A. Italy.” (Don’t use that one!)

You might have students close their devices and then project the map and ask them some of the questions on the table.

When everyone is ready to continue, unlock the next scene.
