Western Europe: Society and Culture
Students consider the elements of a culture and then look specifically at some of these elements in France. Then they work in groups to research some of the cultural elements in an assigned Western European country. Finally, students explain what aspects of their assigned country’s culture they like most and least compared to American culture.

In this experience, students consider the elements of a culture and then look specifically at some of these elements in France. Then they work in groups to research some of the culture elements in an assigned Western European country. Finally, students explain what aspects of their assigned country’s culture they like most and least compared to American culture.

In scene 3, students will work in small groups. You will assign each group one of eight countries for research, so try to have at least eight groups. If you plan to teach the experience Western Europe: Government and Economy, you may want to assign students to the same small groups and the same country in order to give them a deeper familiarity with it.

If you were planning a trip to another country, what aspects of its way of life would you want to experience there? Do not focus on a specific location, but on categories. For example, you would probably want to eat some of the food that is unique to that country. Write your ideas below.

Post your answer

Discuss student responses, which will likely include eating local food, seeing important buildings or sites, doing sports or outdoor activities, visiting museums, attending musical events, and so on. Explain to students that these are all examples of a country’s culture.


Throughout this experience, you will explore some of the cultural elements of the different societies throughout Western Europe.
